Summer – Overwhelming Opportunity

The theme this quarter is how disordered eating behaviors in diabetes (DEB-D) are unintentionally reinforced in research, media, providers, clients, and the diabetes industry. To do this we looked at the joint ADCES and ADA Language Guidelines and applied them to research. We found that this can help you challenge the ‘weight loss cures everything’ messaging and evaluate research conclusions more critically.

Healthcare providers need to do this because Fatphobic soundbites from diabetes research are repeated in the media, cited by professionals, and ‘justified’ by healthcare payers, creating systematic discrimination against higher weight individuals.
